Lesson #1 Winona

Lesson 1: Grade 3


1. Theme/Title of the day’s lesson with a brief description:

Exploring the Winona Historical Center!

2. Materials/resources needed:

*Bus
*Permission slips
*Notebooks
*Writing/drawing utensils


3. Goal(s) for today’s lesson: (This shows people how your lesson “fits” into the MN standards)

The students will see snap-shots from the past through the artifacts at the historical society. They will see how Winona (and America) is touched by many cultures. Students will see how the present has evolved from the past.


4. Objectives for today’s lesson: (This tells people what kids will know or be able to do at the end of the lesson

By the end of the lesson, students will have an appreciation for how diverse cultures have shaped our past and present. Students will recognize similarities and differences from the past and the present.

5. Procedures

a. Introductory experiences: 5 minutes

The introductory experience is the students arriving at the WHS. The teacher will pass out supplies on the bus on the way to the WHS. On the bus ride, the teacher will remind the students to be respectful of other visitors, stick with a buddy, and not touch things.

b. Developmental experiences: (Please number the steps and include approximate time each step will take): 30 minutes

1. Students will participate in the guessing game of the artifacts at the WHS. The tour guide will monitor this activity. (10 minutes)
2. Students will pair off with a buddy.
3. The students will have the opportunity to explore the top floor of the WHS where the timeline is located.
4. The students will write down and describe one object they are unfamiliar with. They must write down what time period the object was used in. They are encouraged to talk to the guide for assistance in identifying it. (10 minutes)
5. The students must also pick one object that they recognize and draw and describe it. They must write down what time period the object was used in. (10 minutes)
6. After they have completed the assignment, the students are encouraged to explore the other time period sections and ask the guide any question they may have.

c. Culminating experiences (closure): 5 minutes

On the bus ride back, the students must share their observations and drawings with one other student.

7. Assessments used during lesson:

The assessment will be the drawings and observations the students documented at the WHS.
